Context:
The Redwood Jam Music Festival — or simply Redwood Jam — seems at first glance to be just another entry in XPR Labs’ catalog of virtual reality music venues. However, it’s much more than just that — Redwood Jam exposed thousands to the possibilities of VR events, serving as a companion venue for an event hosted by XPR at the Augmented World Expo in 2022.
Challenge:
When XPR decided to join the exhibition at AWE 2022, taking care of the physical booth was straightforward — purchase a canopy, print business cards, and book plane tickets. However, XPR wanted to create an experience that would expose AWE 2022 attendees to the power of virtual events — thus, Redwood Jam was born.
Solution:
Redwood Jam would be a one-day music festival, hosted from and livestreamed to the AWE exhibition. It would be set in a venue based on a redwood forest, mimicking national parks close to the physical venue. For entertainers, a number of high-quality VR musicians were hired to perform live on stage. To attract both virtual and physical attendees, Tim Devine, a music industry legend, would open the show with a brief introduction for the headline act. XPR would be added to the press tour on the opening day of the exhibition, timing Tim’s appearance with the reporters’ arrival.
Results:
Ultimately, Redwood Jam was a roaring success. The venue stayed packed for the entire eight hours that the festival ran, with new performers taking the stage every hour. XPR and the festival were shown to dozens of reporters, exposing them and their readers to the possibilities of virtual reality events. And, crucially, the event provided a mixed reality connection for the exhibition, letting attendees experience one of XPR’s virtual events firsthand.
